MALC Demands Immediate Release of DACA Recipient Yenniffer England After Three Months in Detention
AUSTIN, TX — Today, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC) is demanding the immediate release of Yenniffer England, a DACA recipient, Certified Nursing Assistant, and mother of two, who has been detained for nearly three months after a routine traffic stop in the Rio Grande Valley and will miss her immigration court hearing today.
On the night of February 16, 2026, England was pulled over while driving with her brother and daughter. What should have been a minor traffic violation due to an expired driver’s license instead resulted in her arrest and detention, despite her active DACA status. According to her family and advocates, she has remained in custody at the El Valle Detention Facility in Raymondville with no clear public explanation and no indication of when she will be released.
England, a frontline healthcare worker during the COVID-19 pandemic, contracted the virus while caring for patients and nearly lost her life. After a severe illness and long recovery, she returned to continue serving her community.
She is scheduled to miss a scheduled immigration court hearing today while still in detention.
“A mother, a frontline healthcare worker, and a law-abiding Texan should not be sitting in detention for three months with no answers,” said MALC Chairman State Rep. Ramón Romero, Jr. “These are not criminals. We’re talking about a nurse who serves one of the most underserved communities in our state. This is not what people had in mind when they asked for common-sense border security.”
“There is no justification for keeping Yenniffer detained,” said MALC Secretary State Rep. Armando ‘Mando’ Martinez. “She was stopped over an expired license, not a crime that warrants tearing a mother away from her children and locking her up for months. Her family deserves answers, and she deserves to be released today so she can attend her immigration court hearing and continue her life here at home.”
MALC stands with Yenniffer England’s family and community in calling for transparency, accountability, and her immediate release. Cases like hers highlight the ongoing harm caused by the lack of permanent protections for DACA recipients and the devastating consequences for families across Texas.

MALC Exige la Liberación Inmediata de la Beneficiaria de DACA, Yenniffer England, Quien Lleva Tres Meses en Detención
AUSTIN, TX — Hoy, el Caucus Legislativo Mexicano Americano (MALC) exige la liberación inmediata de Yenniffer England, beneficiaria de DACA, asistente de enfermería certificada y madre de dos hijos, quien ha permanecido detenida por casi tres meses después de una parada de tráfico de rutina en el Valle del Río Grande y hoy perderá su audiencia en la corte de inmigración.
La noche del 16 de febrero de 2026, England fue detenida mientras conducía con su hermano y su hija. Lo que debió haber sido una infracción de tránsito menor por una licencia de conducir vencida terminó en su arresto y detención, a pesar de su estatus activo de DACA. Su familia y sus defensores han dicho que England ha permanecido bajo custodia en el Centro de Detención El Valle en Raymondville sin una explicación clara ni indicaciones de cuándo será liberada.
England, proveedora de atención médica durante la pandemia de COVID-19, contrajo el virus mientras atendía a pacientes y estuvo a punto de perder su vida. Después de enfermarse gravemente y de una larga recuperación, regresó para continuar sirviendo a su comunidad.
Hoy perderá su audiencia en la corte de inmigración porque sigue detenida.
“Una madre, proveedora de atención médica y texana que respeta la ley no debería estar detenida por tres meses sin respuestas”, dijo el presidente de MALC, el representante estatal Ramón Romero Jr. “No estamos hablando de criminales. Estamos hablando de una enfermera que atiende a una de las comunidades más desatendidas de nuestro estado. Esto no es lo que la gente tenía en mente cuando pedía seguridad fronteriza con sentido común.”
“No hay justificación para mantener detenida a Yenniffer”, dijo el secretario de MALC, el representante estatal Armando ‘Mando’ Martínez. “La detuvieron por una licencia vencida, no por un delito que justifique separar a una madre de sus hijos y mantenerla encarcelada por meses. Su familia merece respuestas, y ella merece ser liberada hoy para poder asistir a su audiencia en la corte de inmigración y continuar su vida aquí en su hogar.”
MALC expresa su solidaridad con la familia y la comunidad de Yenniffer England y exige transparencia, rendición de cuentas y su liberación inmediata. Casos como el de ella reflejan el daño continuo causado por la falta de protecciones permanentes para los beneficiarios de DACA y las consecuencias graves para familias en todo Texas.
