AUSTIN, TX — Today, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC) sent a formal letter to the Texas Congressional Delegation demanding federal action following the death of Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias, a 56-year-old lawful permanent resident and father of three who died in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in Laredo on October 17.
Andrade-Covarrubias is the second person to die in ICE custody in Laredo this year and the seventh in Texas. His family alleges that he was repeatedly denied necessary medication and medical attention despite suffering from diabetes, hypertension, and a heart condition. ICE maintains that he received appropriate medical care.
“Seven people have died in ICE custody in Texas this year, and we still don’t have answers about what’s happening inside these facilities,” said MALC Chairman Rep. Ramon Romero, Jr. “If ICE says Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubia received proper medical treatment, then Congress needs to demand the records and find out what happened. We cannot keep taking the federal government’s word for it while Texans are dying in its custody.”
In its letter, MALC calls on the Texas Congressional Delegation to demand adequate medical care in ICE detention facilities, an independent investigation into Andrade-Covarrubias’s death, and the release of individuals with serious medical conditions when their medical needs cannot be adequately addressed in detention.
The full letter can be found here.
